What’s New in Spinal Surgery in South Texas

At South Texas Bone & Joint, our dedicated spine surgeon, Dr. Masciale, specializes in providing exceptional spinal surgery in South Texas. As a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with extensive experience, Dr. Masciale is committed to delivering the highest quality of care to his patients.

Biologics & Traditional Fusion Techniques via PLIF, ALIF, & TLIF

While Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusions (PLIF), Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusions (ALIF), and Transforaminal Lumbar Spine Interbody Fusions (TLIF) have been utilized for some time, advancements in implants, instrumentation, and biologics continue to drive progress in spinal fusion procedures.
Dr. Masciale advocates for using Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK), a biocompatible polymer that closely mimics the properties of bone and reduces the risk of subsidence.
Additionally, the incorporation of improved biologics, such as Assimend NovaBone, iliac marrow, concentrated stem-cell-rich aspirate, and nonceramic bone substitute scaffolds, in combination with local bone, enables successful spinal fusion without the need for harvesting bone grafts from the pelvis.

Kyphoplasty

Spinal Cord Stimulation

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to stabilize painful fractured spinal vertebrae. It involves the use of expandable balloons or spine sack implants filled with specialized bone cement. This procedure is commonly performed on elderly individuals with osteoporosis.
Dr. Masciale works with interventional pain management professionals to provide spinal cord stimulation to patients who have clinically shown the likelihood of benefiting. This treatment involves placing dorsal spinal column stimulator paddle leads with an implantable battery via surgically created thoracic laminectomy.
